Dr. Barbara Doty has been serving the Matanuska-Susitna Valley since 1986, delivering babies and taking care of Mat-Su residents of all ages and walks of life. She grew up in Vancouver, Washington, where her family owned and operated a tree seedling nursery. After completing her undergraduate degree in zoology at Washington State University, Dr. Doty spent a year working as a crisis intervention counselor in inner city Seattle, then went to Fairbanks for her first year of medical school with the WWAMI Medical Education program through the University of Washington. Dr. Doty completed her family practice training in Denver, Colorado and returned to Alaska to practice in 1985, first at the Alaska Native Medical Center (ANMC) and then with Matanuska Health Care Associates, with Dr. Cathy Baldwin-Johnson and Dr. Milton Lum, pediatrician. Dr. Doty has maintained a love of teaching and leadership throughout her career, and often works with students interested in a career in various health professions. She was selected as Alaska's "Family Doctor of the Year" in 1997, has been frequently been cited by the Frontiersman's "Best Doctor in the Valley," and was honored to be elected to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP)'s board of directors in 2010. Dr. Doty believes in caring for the whole person through a team-based approach, working together with patients to achieve optimal health. She has completed additional training in acupuncture, integrative medicine and communication, holds a faculty appointment with the University of Washington Department of Family Medicine, and has the goal of developing a patient-centered practice that uses today's technology to optimize patient access, communication, and services while preserving and maximizing the doctor-patient relationship.
